My dreams began when I was young, nurtured by loving family. My father was a Professor at Tsilisi Stat Academy of Art, my mother a teacher, and I quickly found a calling to help other families. This led me to attend Tbilisi State Medical University, where I graduated with honors before devoting myself to my work as a nurse in the Emergency Care department. I then became a night shift doctor and spent my days working on US Embassy healthcare projects and EU commissions to extend my helping hand as far as it could reach.

Even with everything going on in my life, with my busy schedule and commitment to achieving my goals, I managed to meet and fall in love with an amazing man, who I soon called my husband. Together, we were so excited about starting a family of our own, with children to love and nurture just as our families had done for us.

I never thought that I could be infertile.

When I received the news I was so frightened. My husband was so happy about becoming a father and I had been dreaming of motherhood for so long, but now I felt my dreams crashing around me with hopelessness I wasn’t sure we could overcome. How could I ever make my husband truly happy without being able to give him the children I knew he wanted, and would he still love me through everything? My questions were met with so few answers, but still we sought out help to overcome the obstacles in front of us.

Fertility treatment was expensive at the time,

and even though my husband and I were considered well-off financially, it would take us six months or more to find the funds just to try stimulations and IVF. The worst part: there was no guarantee the treatments would work, and they  didn’t.

We went through 11 unsuccessful IVF attempts followed by four surgeries and one successful, but ectopic, pregnancy. Our hearts broke with each failure, our hopes and funds steadily diminishing. I know the pain you are feeling, and I know the struggle you are facing, because I have been there. There’s an indescribable grief that only experience can help you understand when it comes to facing a dark future without the child you’d always hoped, dreamed and planned for. There’s such uncertainty, fear and loneliness in not knowing whether you’ll ever have a baby of your own. But I want you to know that we found a solution, and you can, too.

When we were starting to give up on our dreams, thinking they would ever come true, my husband and I found the answer we had been so desperately looking for. With the help of a beautiful surrogate mother, we were blessed with three gorgeous, healthy children that have completed our family. They made our dreams come true and filled our home with so much love and laughter, and I want you to have this, too. You can, and you will.
